A Day in the Life of an LPN - Compass Alum, Amy Bickford

Compass Career College Practical Nurse students working togetherA day in the shoes of a Licensed Practical Nurse is nothing short of extraordinary. You can expect to do anything from administration task management, meeting with patients, preparing and assisting in surgery, administering medication, monitoring their response, etc. Every day is equipped with different tasks, challenges, and patients.

The average 8-12 hour shifts are filled with unexpected twists and turns, but one thing is for sure; Compass Career College prepares you for it all. Take it from 2016 Compass graduate, Amy Bickford, as she shares her daily life as an LPN.

Within a week of my graduation, I landed my first job at North Oaks. Once I started my career and family, I had to develop a daily routine. I am up every morning at 5 A.M. to get the kids ready for school and drop them off. I prepare myself for the workday by jamming out to my favorite rap songs and getting excited to provide the best care. One of the most important rituals is listening to something that will lighten the mood before a hectic shift. Then, I arrive at the hospital for 6:30, and I analyze the assignment board.

Once I settle in at the hospital, I go to the current floor nurse and get updates on patients, what medications need to be administered. I perform a head-to-toe analysis on each patient and take over the remaining tasks for the day. I frequently communicate with the doctors to ensure the patient is given the correct treatment forms and guarantees their stability. Every day is entirely different from the last, so keeping my critical thinking skills sharp is necessary.

My daily schedule sounds long, but once I make it home, I like to take a long bath and play with the kids to wind down. I soon get my kids ready for sleep, and I make it in bed for 10 P.M. The shifts are tiring but so worth it because I get to make people feel better for hours out of my day. This career is not for the weak-hearted, but it is one of the most rewarding.

“Reflecting at my Compass experience, I would say every hour I studied, every clinical I practiced prepared me for my future.” - Compass Career College Alum, Amy Bickford
