Cosmetology v. Esthetics, What’s the Difference?

Compass Career College cosmetology student working in class. If you have recently considered a career in Cosmetology, you will have seen the many career paths open to you. The choice is yours if you want to become a hairstylist, a manicurist, a makeup artist, an entrepreneur, or an esthetician. So what is the difference, and how can the Cosmetology Program at Compass Career College prepare you?

What is Cosmetology?

A cosmetologist provides various services that focus on treating an individual’s skin, hair, and nails. Beauty professionals who mainly provide skincare services are also known as estheticians. Cosmetology is the study of the broader range of personal care, and a licensed Cosmetologist can look forward to a future profession in a number of fields, including esthetics.

What is Esthetics?

Esthetics is a branch of Cosmetology that focuses on the treatment of skin through procedures like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and facials. At Compass Career College, students will learn the basics of makeup application, facial treatments, hair removal, and how to recognize skin disorders that require the attention of a dermatologist. It will be the estheticians’ job to evaluate a client’s skin and recommend or administer treatments to improve the client’s appearance.

Is There a Long-Term Difference?

Basic personality traits and skills for both Cosmetologists and Estheticians will be similar. Consider how much time and money you want to dedicate to your education. Ask yourself what treatments you see yourself performing? More importantly, find out how well you interact with and care for others. A cosmetologist’s best tool lies in the ability to make others feel as great as they look!
